The Healthy Habits Survey shows that only about one third of American seniors have correct habits. Here are some findings and expert advice.

1. How many times did you brush your teeth yesterday?

Finding: A full 33% of seniors brush their teeth only once a day.

Step: Remove the 300 types of bacteria in your mouth each morning with a battery-operated toothbrush. Brush gently for 2 minutes, at least twice a day.

2. How many times did you wash your hands or bathe yesterday?

Finding: Seniors, on average, bathe fewer than 3 days a week. And nearly 30% wash their hands only 4 times a day—half of the number doctors recommend.

Step: We touch our faces around 3,000 times a day—often inviting germs(病菌)to enter our mouth, nose, and eyes. Use toilet paper to avoid touching the door handle. And, most important, wash your hands often with running water and soap for 20 seconds.

3. How often do you think about fighting germs?

Finding: Seniors are not fighting germs as well as they should.

Step: Be aware of germs. Do you know it is not your toilet but your kitchen sponge (海绵)that can carry more germs than anything else? To kill these germs, keep your sponge in the microwave for 10 seconds.

21. What is found out about American seniors?

  A. Most of them have good habits.

  B. Nearly 30% of them bathe three days a week.

  C. All of them are fighting germs better than expected.

  D. About one third of them brush their teeth only once a day.

22. Doctors suggest that people should wash their hands         .

  C. eight times a day     D. four times a day

23. What can we learn from the text?

  A. We should keep from touching our faces.

  B. A kitchen sponge can carry more germs than a toilet.

  C. There are less than 300 types of bacteria in the mouth.

  D. We should wash our hands before touching a door handle.

24. Where does the test probably come from?

  A. a popular magazine       B. a guide book

  C. a book review            D. an official document

B

My daughter Alisa was born blind in her right eye and was bullied (欺侮)pretty severely in school. So I quitted my job as a babysitter and then schooled my daughter heart and soul at home.

A year ago a boy of 14 befriended my daughter on Facebook after reading something Alisa wrote about bullying. Today he messaged her and asked if she would like six tickets to a Colorado Rockies baseball game. They have never met in person but she said, “Sure! That would be great.”

Then I received a call from his mother explaining why her son had chosen my daughter. She said he thought my daughter deserved them because of all the good she does in the community. Her son, she explained, had experienced a similar situation and was also home schooled.

What she said is true. Now my daughter Alisa continues to teach groups of girls in trouble in our community how to look within themselves for the positive and how to be their own person.

Everything taken into consideration, we decided to meet the mother and the boy at a local bike shop. After meeting, the boy approached my car and my daughter gave him a hug and thanked him for his generosity. She told him that she had never been to a baseball game and that she was going to take her entire family, including myself, her dad, little sister, her cousin and an aunt who has brain cancer.

We all thanked one another, got in our car, and went our way. As we drove home my daughter opened the envelope. Inside it were the tickets and $100 each to buy hot dogs, pay for parking and not have any worries but a great time.

My daughter has always been the giver and now she and our family are the receivers and I can not tell you how incredibly honored we feel to be on the other end. What an incredible young man to have such a kind idea.

25. How did the boy get to know Alisa?

  A. They got in touch via the Internet.

  B. They became familiar when talking face to face.

C. They met when buying tickets to a baseball game.

  D. They went to the same school and met each other.

26. Why did the boy want to offer free tickets to Alisa?

  A. Because Alisa is a disabled girl.

  B. Because he has a lot of money to share.

  C. Because Alisa often helps those in trouble.

  D. Because he has a similar situation with Alisa.

27. What can we infer from the boy?

  A. He is afraid of meeting strangers.

  B. He always bullies smaller children.

  C. He is addicted to the Internet.

  D. He receives education at home.

C

Honey from the African forest is not only a kind of natural sugar, it is also delicious. Most people, and many animals, like eating it. However, the only way for them to get that honey is to find a wild bees’ nest(巢)and take the honey from it. Often, these nests are high up in trees, and it is difficult to find them. In parts of Africa, though, people and animals looking for honey have a strange unexpected helper—a little bird called a honey guide.

The honey guide does not actually like honey, but it does like the wax(蜂蜡) in the beehives (蜂房).

The little bird cannot reach this wax, which is deep inside the bees" nest. So, when it finds a suitable nest, it looks for someone to help it. The honey guide gives a loud cry that attracts the attention of both passing animals and people. Once it has their attention, it flies through the forest, waiting from time to time for the curious animal or person as it leads them to the nest.

When they finally arrive at the nest, the follower reaches in to get at the delicious honey as the bird patiently waits and watches. Some of the honey and the wax, always falls to the ground, and this is when the honey guide takes its share.

Scientists do not know why the honey guide likes eating the wax, but it is very determined in its efforts to get it. The birds seem to be able to smell wax from a long distance away. They will quickly arrive whenever a beekeeper is taking honey from his beehives, and will even enter churches when beeswax candles are being lit.

28.Why is it difficult to find a wild bees’ nest?

A.It"s small in size.               B.It"s hidden in trees.

C.It"s covered with wax.           D.It"s hard to recognize.

29.What do the words "the follower" in Paragraph 4 refer to?

A.A bee.    B.A bird.    C.A honey seeker.    D.A beekeeper.

30.The honey guide is special in the way              .

A.it gets its food                  B.it goes to church

C.it sings in the forest              D.it reaches into bees" nests

31.What can be the best title for the text?

A.Wild Bees                      B.Wax and Honey

C.Beekeeping in Africa             D.Honey-Lover"s Helper

D

Here’s an idea whose time has come: A flu shot that doesn’t require an actual shot.

For the first time, researchers have tested a flu vaccine patch(疫苗贴) in a human clinical trial and found that it delivered as much protection as a traditional injection(注射) with a needle. Doctors and public health experts have high hopes that it will increase the number of people who get immunized(免疫的) against the flu.

Seasonal flu is responsible for up to half a million deaths around the world each year according to the World Health Organization. A team led by Georgia Tech engineer Mark Prausnitz has come up with an alternative method that uses “microneedles”. These tiny needles are so small that 100 of them, arranged in order on a patch, can fit under your finger. Yet they’re big enough to hold vaccine for three types of flu.

None of the study volunteers had serious side effects. The groups that got patches had mild skin reactions that were not seen in the regular needle group, while the volunteers in the regular needle group were more likely to experience pain. Overall, 70 percent of the volunteers who got vaccine patches said they’d rather use them again than get a traditional flu shot. The study authors declared it a success on all fronts.

The biggest beneficiaries could be people in low and middle-income countries, where flu vaccines are hard to come by. Reducing pain is nice, but other benefits—the patch costs less, is easier to transport, doesn’t require refrigeration, can be self-administered and doesn’t cause waste of needles—are even better.

“Microneedle Patches have the potential to become ideal candidates for vaccination programs,” wrote Katja Hoschler and Maria Zambon of Public Health England.

32. What is the passage mainly about?

A. A vaccine patch that cures people of their flu.

B. A patch that makes flu shots a thing of the past.

C. A clinical study that protects people from disease.

D. A method that makes traditional flu shots painless.

33. What do we know about the vaccine patch?

A. It causes slight side effects.

B. It is produced by the WHO.

C. It delivers vaccine to the little finger.

D. It works badly on 30% of the volunteers.

34. What is the feature of the vaccine patch?

A. It’s pain-free. B. It’s non-storable.

C. It’s costly. D. It’s environment-friendly.

35. What is Kaija and Maria’s attitude towards the new shot?

A. Cautious. B. Ambiguous.

C. Favorable. D. Disapproving.

第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

You can read a book for pleasure one time through and be just fine. However, it is harmful to deal with academic reading the same way. In order to read and comprehend a book or article for school, you need to be much more strategic(策略). 36.

Understand types and themes.

In most reading tests, the student is asked to read a passage and predict what might happen next. 37.          This is to make sure you’re able to infer information from the clues. The type of text of a book helps you make predictions about the action-which helps you.

Read with tools.

Any time you read to learn, use active reading skills and there are tools that are not so good to use. A pencil and a pack of sticky notes will be good tools. You can mark in the margins without any damage. Use your notes to write down thoughts, impressions, predictions, and questions as you read. 38.               You create some serious damage when highlighting.

39.

It is not wise to look up new and unfamiliar words as you read. Make a logbook of those new words, and revisit them later. Be sure to keep a logbook of new words and visit it often!

Analyze the title (and subtitles).

Once a text is completed, the writer may reflect on the true message or purpose and come up with a new title. 40.

  A. Find out the new words.

  B. Work the vocabulary skills.

  C. That is, if you want to earn a good grade!

  D. A highlighter(荧光笔), on the other hand, can be a really bad tool.

(Text 10)

I saw a really good video last night when I was taking care of the kids. My sister asked me to look after my two nieces for a couple of hours while she went to the doctor’s. They’re both nine years old, they’re twins. I was a bit tired but I know they love watching films, so on my way to the house I went to the video shop and rented a Disney classic. I’d seen it myself 20 years ago when I was their age, so I was sure they’d enjoy it, and I was right. My nieces love dogs and as the film is about two dogs who fall in love, they sat in front of the TV for over an hour without moving! It’s a complicated love story because one of the dogs lives in the rich part of town and is very carefully looked after and has everything a dog could want, but the other is a street dog who lives on the poor side of town and has nothing.

So it’s a bit like Romeo and Juliet! But of course it’s a Disney film, so although there are some sad moments when we all cried, there’s a happy ending. Everybody who’s seen the film always remembers the scene when the two dogs are eating a plate of spaghetti which ends in a kiss!
